AT Approach Trail Loop Hike
Sunday, January 31, 2010, 8:45 AM
Leader: Charna Perloe charna@email.com 404-668-8554
For our first strenuous hike of the year, we'll take on the Appalachian Trail Approach Trail,
which has its Southern terminus at Amicalola Falls State Park. We won't be hiking 2150
miles to Maine, but instead we'll take a shorter journey to the Len Foote Hike Inn and follow
the Len Foote Trail back to the park. The loop itself is 10 miles, but in the past, the group
has always elected to warm up on the 604 steps along the waterfall. So come prepared to hike!
Lunch will be at the inn - http://hike-inn.com - in their warm, cozy dining room where we're
welcome to treat ourselves to hot beverages. (There is no food served by the Inn, so bring
your lunch). After taking in the winter views, we'll follow the more moderate Len Foote Trail
back to the park.In honor of TuB'shevat, we'll have a mini seder and celebrate the trees.
Ability level: Strenuous. Starting off with 1 mile of 604 stairs up to the top of the
falls, and then 10-mile loop hike has lots of up-and-down elevation, at least 1600 feet
of climbing, not for beginners. So the total hike can be 12 miles if we do the steps.
Meet Time: 8:45AM. We'll depart at 9:00 AM promptly.
Meeting location: Mansell Park & Ride.
· Going North on GA 400, get off at exit 8 ( Mansell Road ).
· Turn left at the end of the ramp onto Mansell Road .
· The Park & Ride is on the LEFT just after you pass under 400.
What to bring:
· Hiking boots are required.
· Plenty of water.
· Dress in layers for winter hiking.
· Bring your lunch and snacks. There is no food available to buy
at the Inn, but you can refill your water.
Dogs: No. Dogs aren't allowed at the Inn.
Cost: Free for members, $5 for non-members, or join for $25/yr
Plus bring money for drivers, $3/car without a Georgia Parks pass.
Weather: As always, either check the website or call the hike leader if you're concerned
about whether the hike will be canceled due to inclement weather.
