HELP FOR HAITI
People's generosity to help the devastation in Haiti has been remarkable. Millions raised. Keep it up! The tragedy is horrific. There are many legitimate organizations raising money to help. There is a comprehensive list of all different types of opportunities to help at CNN, details here.  Pharmacists are needed for 2 week stints in the Dominican Republic. For information, contact Kathleen Kelly at the Global Action Foundation kathy@jkdskelly.com

We are very excited to be getting involved in local events and establishing some great partnerships.

  • FINAL CALL: Ski trip registration closes January 31st. Last chance for Southern Brazil and Caribbean Cruises. See right column.
  • International Volunteer Network of Chicago
One of my colleagues has started an amazing new organization that's all about networking and volunteering. The focus of IVNC is to involve and inform business professionals and Chicago's diplomatic corps on community service and volunteerism opportunities by hosting unique networking events that feature select charitable organizations. When I'm back in Chicago (you heard it here first) I plan to be more actively involved with its activities, but I didn't want my absence to stop people from participating in this great opportunity. The kickoff event is Feb. 3, 5:30 at the Chicago Cultural Center. They are expecting hundreds of professionals. Don't miss it.
Go to www.ivnc.org for info and tickets.
  • Where's Robin?
I am touched that so many of you ask which trips I will personally be leading, so I'll tell you that my plans for 2010 include Vail, New Orleans, Israel (June), Summer Telluride, Ethiopia or Tanzania and Morocco. But I have made sure that my favorite guides are leading the Peru, Brazil and South Africa trips.

We will be working with the founders of this amazing facility that offers simultaneous parent -children class on a volunteer tourism trip to Israel, but in the meantime, we just had to let you know about an EXCITING SEMINAR they have planned with the founder of Krav Maga Worldwide, Darren Levine on Feb. 28. The six hour hands-on session-unbeatable when it comes to empowerment, self defense technique and knowledge. More seminar  info  here or www.kravmaganorthshore.com/
  • DC FILM FESTIVAL: OUR CITY
Yachad-DC is doing some amazing work in the city and we will be partnering with them on a volunteer day, but in the meantime, they are raising money through their annual Film Festival. A full day event about documentaries on Feb. 14 at the Goethe Institute. Check out the details at www.ourcityfilmfestival.com
  • Who's Who in the Steppin' Out community. More and more people have been asking me if I know a bookkeeper, a computer guru, a doctor, and due to the economic times, more and more people are going off on their own doing some really interesting consulting... so I decided to start a directory that will be posted on the website (an average of 1500 distinct visitors a day), and in my emails, which goes to 16,000 people.   $25 for an entry. First 100 to sign up will get 2 additional listings for free. Request a directory form.

OTHER TRIPS WORTH MENTIONING...

EXPERIENCE INDIA ON AN EXOTIC ADVENTURE
April 8-22
A colleague is taking a small group to experience KUMBH MELA IN HARIDWAR INDIA. The Kumbh Mela is one of the most sacred days for Hindus to bathe at certain locations in the Ganges River.Tented cities are built along the river and pilgrims will arrive from all over India and the rest of the world. The Kumbh Mela, for the rest of us, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It is a wonder to see this crowd of merchants and buyers, musicians and performers, and seekers and holy men dressed in every imaginable costume - from the finest clothes to the half or full naked "naga saddhus". As the sun rises on the Ganges this colorful ceremony is an exotic and unforgettable sight. In the evenings the ghats become breath takingly beautiful with thousands of marigolds and offerings floating in the waters of Ganges. The trip also includes a visit to India's first national park, Corbett Tiger Reserve, Taj Mahal and India's Ghost City.  If you are interested in this unique trip, call or email us for more information.

Elatchee Nature Center Hike

Sunday Jan 24, 2010, 10:00 am

Leader:    Bonnie Rubin, tazlina25@comcast.net  404-788-5788

Our 5 mile hike will take us through pine forests, hardwood ridges, streams, and wetlands. A little more than half way we will come upon Chicopee Lake where we will stop and have lunch/snacks over looking the lake and Chicopee Woods where The National Audubon Society has designated this 1200 acre tract of land an Important Bird Area (IBA). This means that Chicopee Woods has been recognized by a panel of bird and habitat experts as an essential area for migrating and nesting birds. Then finishing the loop hike and back to the cars.

Ability Level:  Need to be able to hike 5 miles including a few hills.

Meeting Time:  10:00am. We'll wait 15 minutes before departing.  Thanks for being on time.

Meeting Location:  Indian Trail Park & Ride

Directions :  I-85 north outside the perimeter.
Take the Indian Trail Exit, Exit 101
Turn left, go over the bridge over I-85.
Take a right at the light to enter the park & ride lot.
Once inside the lot, turn right at the stop sign.

Suggested Items to bringHiking boots, water, lunch or snacks. There is no charge for using these trails but Elatchee is a a non-profit environmental education center so a small donation in the donation box would not be a bad idea.

Are Dogs Permitted?  Yes, but under your control at all times.

Cost:  Members free, $5 nonmember fee, or join today for $25/year.  Please reimburse your driver appropriately for fuel.

AT Approach Trail Loop Hike
Sunday, January 31, 2010, 8:45 AM

Leader: Charna Perloe charna@email.com 404-668-8554

For our first strenuous hike of the year, we'll take on the Appalachian Trail Approach Trail,
which has its Southern terminus at Amicalola Falls State Park.  We won't be hiking 2150
miles to Maine, but instead we'll take a shorter journey to the Len Foote Hike Inn and follow
the Len Foote Trail back to the park.  The loop itself is 10 miles, but in the past, the group
has always elected to warm up on the 604 steps along the waterfall.  So come prepared to hike!

Lunch will be at the inn - http://hike-inn.com - in their warm, cozy dining room  where we're
welcome to treat ourselves to hot beverages.  (There is no food served by the Inn, so bring
your lunch).  After taking in the winter views, we'll follow the more moderate Len Foote Trail
back to the park.

In honor of TuB'shevat, we'll have a mini seder and celebrate the trees.

Ability level:  Strenuous.  Starting off with 1 mile of 604 stairs up to the top of the
falls, and then 10-mile loop hike has lots of up-and-down elevation, at least 1600 feet
of climbing, not for beginners.  So the total hike can be 12 miles if we do the steps.

Meet Time: 8:45AM.  We'll depart at 9:00 AM promptly.
Meeting location:  Mansell Park & Ride.
· Going North on GA 400, get off at exit 8 ( Mansell Road ).
· Turn left at the end of the ramp onto Mansell Road .
· The Park & Ride is on the LEFT just after you pass under 400.

What to bring:
· Hiking boots are required.
· Plenty of water.
· Dress in layers for winter hiking.
· Bring your lunch and snacks.  There is no food available to buy
at the Inn, but you can refill your water.

Dogs:  No.  Dogs aren't allowed at the Inn.

Cost:  Free for members, $5 for non-members, or join for $25/yr
Plus bring money for drivers, $3/car without a Georgia Parks pass.

Weather:  As always, either check the website or call the hike leader if you're concerned
about whether the hike will be canceled due to inclement weather.
